Repowering, the dismantling of older wind turbines and their replacement by modern high-capacity turbines, has reached a new high point in Germany, the global pioneer in the erection of wind turbines. The first phase of the largest repowering project to date in Germany has now been initiated on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn. 52 million euros has been invested for this project. 150 farmers have joined forces in the "Fehmarn Mitte" wind park with the aim of halving the number of wind turbines on Fehmarn from the original 150 to 68 by the end of 2007 and almost quadrupling the capacity to just under 160 megawatts.

Nordex turbine on Lamma Island
The first wind turbine in Hong Kong has gone into operation. Located on Lamma Island off the coast of Hong Kong, a Nordex N50 is supplying enough energy to meet the needs of around 250 households. The turbine officially went into operation during a ceremony in February 2006. The N50 is a symbol of a new kind of energy provision. Lamma Island is also home to Hong Kong?s only power station, which is fuelled by coal. Like the rest of Asia, Hong Kong is also facing the challenge of having to diversify its energy base and reduce heavy dependence on coal. Wind energy is one of the most important options in this respect. This shouldn?t come as a surprise ? it is freely available as a domestic source of energy and can be converted into electricity efficiently and in an environmentally-friendly manner.

The People's Republic of China is the world's second-largest energy consumer. Its power requirement will increase to many times its current size in the coming decades. Already, the company has major problems in dealing with fundamental deficits in environmental protection - around 70% of the energy consumption is generated by coal-fired power stations, which are environmental polluters.

Egypt has a well-developed electrical power supply that covers almost all of its population. However, oil reserves are limited, drilling is expensive, and firing involves heavy air pollution.
